What is Bio-identical Hormone Replacement
What does bio-identical mean?
Bio-identical applies to any hormone that looks chemically identical to human hormones and are plant based. Any product called estradiol, progesterone, or testosterone is by definition bio-identical.
What hormones should I replace?
Testosterone is important for women as well as men. We make more testosterone than estrogen throughout our lives as women, although 10x less than men. Replacing low testosterone improves sex drive, muscle mass and bone density, and may reduce the risk of breast cancer. Testosterone begins to drop in our 30's.
Progesterone also drops as early as our 30's. It is almost undetectable after menopause since it is made by the ovaries after ovulation. Low progesterone is associated with mood swings, sleep disruption, and heavy bleeding.
Estrogen fluctuates throughout our cycles, and drops to almost undetectable levels after menopause. Low estrogen causes hot flashes,, night sweats, vaginal dryness, brain fog, and plenty other unpleasant symptoms.
